Club Newsletter - 7/1: Field Status Update

For the past few months, we have been engaged in ongoing discussions with both Dekalb county and the owners of the other portion of our field, seeking approval to resume flying activities. However, due to the uncertain circumstances surrounding the Defend the Forest and Stop Cop City movements, our request is presently on hold with Dekalb county, pending their effective resolution of the security concerns. While we have secured permission from the property owner of the east side of the field, the west side of the field falls under the jurisdiction of Dekalb county. FYI: If you are standing on the runway at the ATLRC Logo, split the logo in half, everything on the left side belongs to Dekalb and everything on the right side is private property.

Currently, the aforementioned groups are in the midst of a "Week of Action" involving "peaceful" demonstrations throughout the city. Law enforcement agencies are maintaining a heightened state of alertness at the airfield and its surrounding areas.

Authorities anticipate some level of activity from the mentioned groups in the upcoming weeks. So the field is still closed for security and saftey reasons.

Now a bit of good news: You may have come across reports regarding Dekalb county's intentions to construct a new field specifically for our use. Following recent discussions with the heads of the Park service and other officials, the plan is to relocate our field approximately 300+ feet westward from its current location. They will be clearing a lot of trees and leveling the ground. The entrance is expected to remain unchanged. The development of multiple structures is being considered to accommodate our needs, including a separate Heli Pad and flying area. Although the specifics are currently in the early stages, a clearer vision will gradually take shape as time progresses. We will have the opportunity to contribute our input regarding the field's design.
